CHURCH HANDBOOK EXPLANATION OF PATRIARCHAL BLESSINGS
SUMMARY:
Every worthy, baptized member may receive a patriarchal blessing
A patriarchal blessing provides inspired direction from Heavenly Father.
Parents and church leaders encourage members to prepare spiritually.
Bishopric interviews members who desire to receive a patriarchal blessing; prepares a patriarchal blessing recommend.
The member must be mature enough to understand the significance and sacred nature of the blessing. Ideally the member should be young enough that many important decisions in life are still ahead. However, older adults are also encouraged to receive their patriarchal blessings. The member should understand the basic doctrine of the gospel before receiving a patriarchal blessing.
After receiving a recommend, the member contacts the patriarch (Brother Ken Higginbotham) to set up an appointment.
On the day of the appointment, the member should go to the patriarch with a prayerful attitude and in Sunday attire. Members may fast, but fasting is not required.
The blessing recipient will receive a copy of the blessing from the patriarch.
These excerpts from talks by Elder James Faust give a great summary about the purposes of patriarchal blessings:
