A sensory room was announced a while back, and I'm happy to say that while still under construction, we have a space set up, and the beginning of what I hope will be a well-used resource for the ward.
A few people have asked me what and whom this room is for.
What it is: a space to help children and youth who experience dysregulation while at church. Often this type of room is used in schools with students who have anxiety, sensory processing disorder, ADHD, Autism spectrum disorder, or who just feel overwhelmed and need a quiet, safe space to reset. The room is equipped with a dimmer switch, some fidget toys, wiggle cushions, some tactile objects and coming soon a beanbag chair and sensory floor tiles. If you have something that you think would add to the space, please let me know!
Items such as fidgets or a wiggle seat can be signed out for use during sacrament or 2nd hour, as long as they are returned after church. What it is not: this is not a space for hanging out, playing (unless this is to help re-regulate), or for adults who are not accompanied by a youth or child.
Eventually, the hope is that there will be a lock on the door and it will be always set up and ready for use when church or activities are happening. For now I will set up and take down the items every Sunday.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or ideas!
